Two Years Post-Surgery

Wow, time flies! It's been a little over two years since my Nissen Fundoplication, and I've completely forgotten what it's like to feel sick with GERD.

I'm happy to report that I have been enjoying eating and drinking everything I want (except for soda, which upsets my stomach). Coffee, champagne, ice cream, burgers--you name it, I can have it.

I have absolutely no reflux, and my delayed gastric emptying is gone. I have no gas or bloating. My voice is essentially back to normal.

On a daily basis I take one Aciphex for mild dyspepsia (burning) in my stomach, and that's it. I have taken simethicone and Reglan very sparingly since surgery.

There is only one downside to the Nissen Fundoplication--I can no longer vomit. This is rarely a problem for most people, but I got the flu in May, and it was pretty miserable retching (and not vomiting). Then again, vomiting is pretty miserable, too.

My Nissen Fundoplication is one of the best things I've ever done for my health and happiness.

Thanks so much for this blog. I'm having the surgery in December and have been DREADING IT...wondering if I'll regret it. Sleep with head elevated A FOOT and prescription meds a.m./p.m. help, but I clearly need to do something before I get any older (I'm 62). I have only found complaints online about this surgery. Your blog gave me a real boost. Many, many thanks.

Thank you so much for this blog! I'm 28 and have been struggling with GERD and a hiatal hernia for as long as I can remember. I've always avoided a fundoplication, but this past year my GERD has become unbearable. Everything else I read online in such a horror story, I'm scheduled for surgery in December and can't decide if it's truly a good idea. Your blog was such a great discovery! I am so afraid that I'll have a terrible recovery and complications, and it's amazing to hear about someone having a successful outcome. Thank you!

Thank you for your blog. I had my surgery a week ago and have been anxious about every new or changing sensation. I have burning but it seems to be just in my stomach. I had some coughing which scared me. I don't want to do this again. Overall each day keeps getting better. Thanks Again

How long after surgery were you able to have coffee? I never asked the question I'm 7 weeks post surgery and started drinking again at 6 weeks.. seeing the surgeon in a couple weeks for a check up :s hopefully not damaged anything

My surgeon allowed coffee right after surgery. I didnt try it though until about 2 weeks after. I only have one cup in the morning.

Debra, thank you for this blog! I'm 37 and have been dealing with Gerd for 15 years. It's not nearly gotten as bad as what you described, but medication is no longer doing much for me. I am scared of the surgery and what life will be like after, so this blog is helpful. How are you doing now that it's been 5 years?

Hi Debra, thanks so much for sharing your story. I’m 28 and have had heartburn since my teens. However, in the last 2 years have started having many laryngopharyngeal symptoms as well, such as severe throat pain and swelling, chronic cough, etc. I’ve also lost about 30 lbs due to not being able to eat. I’ve seen a few specialists who have suggested fundoplication surgery and I’m just now starting to consider it. I noticed on your blog that you are from the Bay Area and was curious as to the name of your surgeon, as I am from just north of Sacramento and am willing to make the drive!
